Works everywhere
Drop-in install on WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, Framer, Ghost, and any HTML-friendly stack. No build step, no developer needed.
Plus 250+ other platforms via the embed snippet. If your site can render a <script> tag, it can render the Social Proof Widget: Real Purchase Popups, Live Sales, Visitor Activity.
Six things that matter when you are running honest social proof popups, not 30 features no one uses.
Every notification is tied to a real event from Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe, BigCommerce, Magento, HubSpot, or your custom backend. Poper does not ship a fake-buyer mode and never invents names, cities, or order amounts. The FTC fined three vendors in 2024 for exactly that. Your popups stay defensible.
Recent purchases, new signups, live visitor counter, low stock alerts, and recent activity. Mix any combination on the same page. Throttle each one independently.
Mask last names, drop city, hash emails, or only show first initial. Defaults are EU-safe out of the box.
Split visitors between control and treatment. Prove the lift before you commit. Stats engine included.
Async, lazy, scoped CSS, under 35 KB gzipped. Notifications render off the critical path. Lighthouse scores stay where they were after embedding.
Track which events drove which clicks, which clicks drove which orders, and which placements lifted revenue. Honest attribution, not vanity metrics.
Use cases
Four buyer types who get the most lift from embedding Social Proof Widget: Real Purchase Popups, Live Sales, Visitor Activity on their site.
Stream Shopify or WooCommerce orders into a corner popup on product and checkout pages. Lifts add-to-cart and checkout completion 18-32% on average.
Pipe new HubSpot or Stripe signups into a sign-up activity popup on your pricing page. Removes the empty-room feeling that kills SaaS trial starts.
Show how many people enrolled in your cohort or workshop in the last hour. Pairs the seat counter with recent-enrollment popups. Closes seats fast without invented urgency.
Stream OpenTable, Resy, or your custom reservation engine into a corner popup on the booking page. Visitors see real tables filling up tonight, not invented urgency.
All four show recent activity popups. Only one is built around honest data, GDPR defaults, and a free plan.

Social proof is one of the oldest and best-documented levers in marketing. Robert Cialdini named it as one of the six universal principles of influence in 1984, and 40 years of research since then has only confirmed it: when buyers see that other buyers like them just took the same action, they are more likely to take it themselves. Spiegel Research at Northwestern found 18-35% conversion lift on product pages that surface real third-party activity. But the category got a black eye in the late 2010s when a wave of vendors shipped fake-buyer modes. The FTC's 2024 update to the Endorsement Guides cracked down hard, and three vendors paid seven-figure settlements. This guide covers what works in 2026: real webhook-fed notifications, GDPR-safe defaults, FTC honesty, and the conversion math that makes the category worth the effort.
In 2017 a vendor was caught shipping a fake-buyer simulator. In 2019 a competitor settled with the FTC for $7M. In June 2024 the FTC published a major revision of its Endorsement Guides explicitly warning that fabricated reviews, invented testimonials, and synthetic activity popups are deceptive and actionable. The new guides also expanded liability to the platforms that supply the deception, not just the brand running the popup. Three vendors paid settlements in the second half of 2024. The practical takeaway for any business considering a social proof widget in 2026: the popup must be tied to a real event in your real backend. Poper's widget does not ship a fake-buyer mode. Every notification fires from a webhook (Shopify orders, WooCommerce orders, Stripe charges, HubSpot signups, custom backend events). If the webhook is silent, the widget is silent. That is the defensible posture and it is not a marketing limitation, it is the only legal posture in the United States today.
The honest economics of social proof popups in 2026: on a high-traffic ecommerce product page with real Shopify webhook data, expect 18-25% lift in add-to-cart and 12-20% lift in checkout completion. On a SaaS pricing page with real signup events from your CRM, expect 15-22% lift in trial starts. On an event registration page, expect 25-40% lift on registrations during the final 48 hours. The lift comes from real data, sensible throttling (one notification every 10-15 seconds, never the same buyer twice), and placement near the conversion CTA, not at the bottom of the page. Pages that do worse than the baseline are usually the ones with no throttling (popups every two seconds), invented data (visitors notice immediately), or notifications fired on pages that have no conversion to make (a privacy policy page).
Fomo, founded in 2016, popularized the category and currently starts at $25 per month for 10K monthly notifications. Proof Pulse (formerly UseProof, then Proof, now under new ownership) sits at $29 per month and historically built a reputation for aggressive marketing in the early days that did not always match the product reality. TrustPulse is a TruConversion property starting around $39 per year for low-volume sites. All three are built around the same core mechanism: webhook in, popup out. The differences are pricing, free plan availability (none of them have one comparable to Poper's free tier), bundling (none of them include forms, popups, quizzes, and 100+ other widgets in the same subscription), and GDPR defaults (Fomo and Proof require manual configuration to be EU-safe, Poper ships EU-safe by default). For an ecommerce store doing fewer than 10K monthly notifications, Poper's free plan is the default starting point. For a high-volume site at 100K+ notifications, the comparison comes down to bundling and analytics.
If your buyer is in the EU, the personal data you can show in a popup is restricted by GDPR Article 6 (lawful basis), Article 5 (data minimization), and Article 7 (consent). The safe defaults: first name only, drop the surname, drop the email, drop the precise city (use country or region), drop the order amount unless you have separate consent. Aggregate counters (visitor counter, low stock counter) are fine because they reveal no individual. Schema.org markup is unaffected. Poper's anonymization defaults are configured to satisfy these rules out of the box for any new EU account, and a single toggle anonymizes existing accounts. For non-EU traffic these defaults can be relaxed (Poper detects visitor location and serves the appropriate version automatically), but the safest approach is to use the EU-safe defaults globally. The conversion impact of dropping the surname and city is small (Spiegel Research showed less than 3% reduction in lift), and the legal exposure of running a non-compliant popup in Germany or France is large.
A social proof widget is an embeddable script that displays real-time notifications of recent purchases, signups, registrations, or visitor activity on a website. The notifications are triggered by webhook events from a real backend (Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe, HubSpot, custom CRM) and are designed to surface authentic peer behavior to new visitors so they have signal to act on.
